yes you can put mortar
you clean your trench, it takes at least 2 to 3 cm thick mortar to fit

then you stick your pieces of slab above

What call you but slabs?

you find great DIY bags of mortar 25 or 35 kg.
is sure you will too, but a bag of mortar costs about 10
the mixture is close by, you put in a container a little mortar, you add water to have a homogeneous mortar.

if you do not put enough you can always make a batch, the mortar has dried for several hours putting
